The chapter opens with a conversation between Yagi and Hiroyuki. Yagi tells Hiroyuki that he and his friend are in the middle of a search for the Stone of the Arrow, and that they're worried that the Cardinal is using the Stone as a toy. He asks Yagi if they've seen the Stone, and Yagi says that he's seen it in the Yukawas' room, but that he doesn't know if it's there or not. He tells Yagi to go ahead and tell the Cardinal if he has anything to share with him, because he'll be able to report back to him if he needs anything. The conversation turns to the possibility of the Stone being hidden in the Haystack, and the two men discuss whether or not they should use it as a weapon against the Cardinal, since they don't really have the skills to use it against him. The two men decide to take a break from the search, and they discuss whether it would be better to keep pretending to be loyal to the Cardinal until they can figure out a way to get rid of him, or whether they should just make the Stone spit out where it is when they catch it
