About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the "hotchpotch" of the air in the city. The narrator tells us that the air is "like lukewarm water" . He says that he wasn't sleeping, and that he's feeling sick. He asks his uncle where they're from, and his uncle says they were kidnapped, too. He's not sure where they are, and says he'll go to report to Sanagawa. He doesn't want to tell him about the stone, though, because it looks like it's been forced out of "stasis." The narrator explains that entering "stasis" is like entering "the ocean depths" , which is like going from the surface to the ocean floor. It's like "entering the ocean depths and rising to the surface." He says he hates being the one to tell the guy that the stone is stolen, because he'd rather tell him that it was stolen by the ghost of the woman who tried to escape. He adds that he ran into someone who was able to move, and he hasn't seen anyone since. He wonders where they took their dad, and wonders if they took him back to the kidnappers. He also wonders if he can make rash decisions without his wife's help, since she's always there to keep him from making rash decisions.
