About This Chapter
"There marks the boundary between the outside world and the inside world" , the narrator tells us. He's referring to the wall between the inside and outside world, which is a metaphor for the relationship between the two worlds. The narrator says that this wall is weak, but that it's only one use. He adds that it takes a long time for people to get to know each other. Juri tells the narrator not to worry, because she's already lived her life to the fullest. She says that she'll get a bad sinus infection from the dust from all the smoke. She tells Juri that she has another shift at the meatpacking plant that day, and that her mom is working late, too. She asks Juri to go pick up her nephew, who is her only nephew. She's worried that he's going to get drunk and start drinking all the time, so she wants to get him ASAP. She also tells her that her uncle, who claims to be her nephew's uncle, is waiting for her at the gate of the boarding house. She calls him a "weirdo" and tells him that she sent her brother to pick her up. He asks her if she remembers him, and she says she does, but she doesn't remember him. He tells her to call him "maa- tan" if she can, and he asks her to hold his hand the next day if he can see her. He says he'll call her "ma- tan." Juri asks him if he remembers her on the first day of school, and Juri says he does, and then she asks him to hold her hand tomorrow if he has a chance to see her again. She then asks him what he thinks of her four sisters. He replies that they're "eye-wonder" and asks her what she thinks of them. She replies that she likes them, too, and says she'd like to see them tomorrow. He then asks her why she should trust him so much, and when she says that he
