About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Underground Man explains that he and the other men are trapped inside the house. He tells the others that they will be taken out by the men if they do not leave. He asks if they can go outside and speak with Rosa, but she refuses to listen to him. The Underground Man says he will not go easy on them if they jump him. He says he does not want to go all "white-eyed and bloody-nosed" . He adds that Rosa is too dangerous for them to go outside alone. He gives them some food and tells them that he will be back at 11:00 at night. He explains that his father does not know much about the stone. He has said that he inherited the stone from his grand-father. He also says that if he returns it to the society, he will keep it bottled up. He thinks that even if they have a son, he may not be able to do anything about it. He wonders if Gramps will go for this compromise. He believes that he is skeptical of it, as he has been worn down by society and discord. He is sure that the old man will spread the message to the new man. He does not think that Gramps has the right to decide what should be done with the stone
