In this chapter, the narrator returns to the house of his childhood friends, the Tamuras. He tells them that he fell in love with the house when he was 17 years old, and that he has not run away from it ever since. He says that he would like to finish his novel someday, but that he will not be able to do so because of the responsibilities that come with being a member of the family.
