This chapter opens with a flashback to a time before the novel's protagonist, Hiroyuki, was orphaned and sent away to live with his parents. The protagonist's parents, Milady and Milady's father, have remarried and are now living with Milady, who is now the mother of their two children. Milady is upset that Milady has not been able to provide for her children, and she tries to console her by reminding her of the good times she has had with her parents. She tries to comfort Milady by telling her stories about her parents' lives, but Milady does not understand what she is being told. She tells Milady that she is different from Milady in that she does not want to return home, and that she has been acting strange. She asks Milady to come to her house for a visit, but she is not able to come.
