About This Chapter
The narrator wakes up in the middle of the night in a tree-hole. He wants to know how he managed to hide in the tree for so long without being found. He asks why he didn't tell him earlier that he was going to leave. He also asks why his friend is so drunk that he can't handle the sticky candy he's wearing. The narrator asks if they're going to go back to their hotel, or if he'll just stay in the hole for a few hours. He's worried that they've forgotten about him. He tells the narrator to go buy snacks for the lantern festival that's going on in the afternoon. He doesn't want to face the awkwardness of the situation outside his door now, so he asks the narrator why he hasn't been buying snacks since the night before. He then asks if the narrator is from the south, and the narrator tells him that he is not buying anymore. He says that the narrator has been avoiding him since last night, and that the reason for this is because the narrator left him to settle a bill on purpose. He goes on to say that he couldn't sleep last night because of the narrator, and he also had trouble sleeping because of his friend. He blames his friend for waking up so early because he'd been going back to his hotel first. He wonders why he lost control like that. He just wants to be like "clueless and forgetful" .
