The next morning, Physician Xiao and the general search for the southern emperor, but they find no sign of him. The doctor tells the general that he is still alive, and that if he does not find him before the emperor regains consciousness, he should write a letter to the emperor asking him to forget his sufferings. The emperor, the doctor tells him, is destined to be emperor, and he should not worry about his freedom. The general tells the doctor that they have captured a "suspicious man" in the cave and searched the place where the man was found. The man is not a member of the army, the general says, but a "villager." The general asks the villager if he has seen anyone fleeing, and the man replies that he has not.
