The scene opens with a group of soldiers gathered at the home of a general. The general tells the soldiers that he joined the army so he could survive a famine when he was sixteen years old. Three days later, the general is killed in battle. The northern kingdom is in danger of being swept into war with the southern kingdom. The southern kingdom needs the general's help. The snow starts to fall again on the eighth day, which is the day that the northern general dies.
