This chapter's epigraph comes from a famous line in Shakespeare's Henry IV , Part I, Scene 1 : "If so, / Draw slash, / Whether you were the Northern kingdom emperor, or not, / You cared for the injured southern / soldiers sincerely" . In other words, if you're the emperor of the northern kingdom and you care about the wounded soldiers of the southern kingdom, then you should care for the wounded southern soldiers. If you are the northern emperor, and you don't care at all about the injured soldiers, then there's no reason for you to care. Physician Xiao tells the doctor that the emperor's spy has been ambushed and that the whole squad has been killed. The doctor asks the deputy general where the emperor is, and the general says that no trace of the emperor has been found anywhere in the mountain. The general wants to search the mountain for the emperor, but the doctor says that they must first find the emperor before they can do so.
