The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, where we learn that Yangguang has finally gotten his first promotion. He wants to become the "upper class of society," but his income does not grow much, so he chooses a ring to commemorate his "turning point in life" . The ring is too expensive, however, and he wishes he could have it. When he sees Madame Quin, he is deeply attracted to her "bealitiful appearance" and her "linique temperament." He wishes that she could be his wife, but his childish behavior prevents him from doing so for a long time. Madame Quin tells him that the company is going to send gifts to its customers in the future, and that she would like to pick them from the shop. He is happy that Madame Quin has come, but he is disappointed that she is not his wife. He tells her that he has already drunk up, and when Madame Quin asks him when he can see her again, he says that he came to see him after the death of Madame Quin in order to tell the police that she had disappeared. He says that the police don't know that she died of murder, but that a third person had seen the crime scene. He adds that the third person is a college student, but she did not know about the murder until after it had happened. He warns that if the police find out about Madame Quin's disappearance, they will have no money, no status, and no one will be able to fight them. If Madame Quin is still alive, she will not leave him, even if he has no money or status. He promises that she wont last three days. He asks Madame Quin to be his model for the class, and she agrees.
