About This Chapter
The narrator complains to the biology club about how long it's been since he's taken a bath. The club brings in a sweet potato and sniffs the air. The narrator says that he doesn't care how many kidneys his dead father gave his body, so he'll figure out the number of them first. He also says that no one who hasn't been bathing in two weeks can live next door to him. He says that's even more of a problem, since he can't breathe the "putrid air" coming out of the club's windows. He asks the club what they're going to do with him, and they say they'll strip off his "fetid rags" and "sand off" his "top layer of skin" . He's worried that this will only make his nervous system worse, since his skin is so dirty. He wonders if they can do anything to help him, since the fault lies solely on his own. He then asks if they'd like to use his "nile lavender soap" instead of his own, since they've cut all his water and electricity. He wants to scrub his teeth with steel wool, but they won't let him.
