In this short scene, the Governess's son-in-law, Horatio, tells Horatio that his wife is pregnant with their third child, and that he should give Horatio a present to mark the occasion. Horatio replies that he doesn't expect anything from a young man like him, but he does expect a gift from his wife. The Governess accuses Horatio of having an affair with his wife, and she accuses him of having a sexual affair with a teacher. Horatio defends himself by saying that he has no idea what he's talking about. He tells Horatio to go read the newspaper the next day and tell the story of his affair. Horatio says that he'll explain everything to his wife and she'll be fine.
