The narrator is asked to bring his girlfriend, Annie, to the festival. The narrator refuses, saying that he doesn't think Annie and he will ever get along. He tells the narrator that he has always wanted him to do something for the school, and that he feels some responsibility here. When Annie arrives, the narrator tells her that he's sorry to keep her waiting. He also tells her about the target shooting at the festival, which he says is the only place where a man is "unhallowed" . He says that he spent all his time trying to be "macho" like his dad, but his dad just stood up and said, "no ! " The narrator then tells the story of how his father once told him that it's "only natural" for a man to shoot a giant squid. He compares the squid to a "blue thunder" , and says he wishes someone would get him that stuff. He goes on to tell the narrator about a plan by reiner and his friends to pretend to have a fight with him and his girlfriend. They'll pretend that they're going to get ice cream first, and then they'll try to push Annie in front of him. Then reiner will pretend to be a six-year-old kid, and the narrator will pretend that he is six years old. Then he'll have to pretend that his girlfriend is pregnant, and he'd have to give her a push to get her to go away. Finally, he says, he wants to go to the next festival because this one is the best.
