About This Chapter
It's time to leave the "hell hole" and get out of the "concrete hell hole" , says the narrator. He's dropping by the store to pick up a new pair of pants, and he runs into the guy who lent him the old one . The guy's name is David brooks, and the narrator thinks he's a "sophisticate" like him. The narrator is bummed out because he borrowed the new pants from the guy, but he also runs into his "only friend of social stratum" . He tells the guy that he'll be home alone, and that he needs to return the old pants to the guy. The man is mad that he didn't get a pencil back from the vacation he took in the summer, and now he wants to give it to the president of the student council. The student council president is supposed to give the pencil to the person who's supposed to receive it, but the narrator tells him to just leave the pencil there, since it's so important to him that it be returned on time. He also tells the man that he was moved by the tribute to Liza Minelli that the guy gave at the last council meeting, and says that if he hadn't known about it, he wouldn't have been so moved by it. So, the narrator says, the guy is mad at him for forgetting to return his old pants, but that's all right, since the guy has the right to take whatever he wants with him wherever he goes.
