About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the night camp at which the students are testing their knowledge of the world. The teacher tells the students to keep their studies going until the "rasp demons end his suffer" , but the students do not heed the teacher's advice. They find themselves in the middle of a discussion about the "legend of the snow-titan" . Everyone knows that if they ran out of food, they'd be the first to run out, but they don't know if there's a snow titan in the area. Everyone thinks that they've run into a giant Santa Claus who's been crushed by the snow. The students decide to take refuge in some cookies, which they find in the hut. The narrator tells the story of how a group of upper-classmen lost their way in the snow and ran into the "white titan" who was waiting for them at the door. Everyone thought that the snow titan was an ogre, but there wasn't one. The meal that the students ate was curry, and the narrator feels sorry for them because it was the only food they ate that day. He says that the food has always been the bright spot in their lives since they lost track of Santa Claus. He wonders if the giant is a mythical giant who runs a fish-processing plant, or if he's just trying to be a good guy. He also wonders why the narrator is still acting like a cock when he knows who is behind the whole thing.
