The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter, in which the narrator explains that he has just asked Holobem to do a mock exam as a practice for his master's speech. He is surprised to find that the tutor is much better at his job than he is at his own, and that he is the opposite of the other tutor whom he has asked to do the mock exam. The chapter ends with the narrator explaining that he had planned to go to his mother's home and buy her a present, but she was on her way to work, so he had to stay home and work extra hours to make it. He tells the story of how his parents had passed away, and how his mother was the one who raised him. He says that his mother is an amazing person, but that not everyone can accomplish this, and he will not tell anyone what he said. He goes on to say that even if his parents were adopted by a wealthy family, he would feel guilty for giving away his freedom. He then says that he was working extra hours because his sister is pressuring him not to find a job. He adds that he and his sister were planning to go watch a movie together, but now he is not sure if they can make it, and she says she will consider the idea once she has some experience. The narrator then asks if he works extra hours at his company, but he says that there is nothing for him to do, and it still makes him uncomfortable.
