In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, the young Miss Betsey. We are told that she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Betsey, and that she lives in Yeosu, a small town in the south of the country. She is very shy and does not speak much English, but she does have a good sense of humor. She tells us that her father is very fond of her, but that he does not approve of her relationship with Mr. Yeosu. He also tells her that he will not marry her until she gives up her love for him.
