In this chapter, the Governess tries to make light of her boss's behavior. She tells him that she's a better match for him than he is. The Governess tells him about a magazine writer who was looking for someone to work for one day. He found her, and she was the one who wrote the article for him. She's not jealous of him, she says, because he's married to a beautiful girl like her. She also tells him of her new lipstick, which she says is meant to give courage to girls who are fighting their battles. She says she'll try it on, and if anything goes wrong, she can call her at the business card number on the card. The narrator says that the pretty lady is even prettier now because she happened to be the partner of the man who wrote her article. He tells her that he was wondering why she made him wait after the publication for dessert. He says he was just thinking that she looked like she was doing better than she actually was. He also says that he doesn't care what people think of her anymore. He thanks her for the makeup she gave him, and tells her to tell the shop owner that she looks cute.
