Okay, now we're back at the beginning of the book, where we find out that the narrator has a crush on a girl named Hasegawa. She's the daughter of a client who works with the narrator's father, so she's supposed to marry that client's son. The narrator is bummed that she can't marry the son of the client she works for, but she doesn't want to make a big deal out of it. She tells her father that she wants to marry him, but that she'll have to marry someone else first. She also tells him that she has to marry her father, and that she won't be able to do so if she marries someone else's kid. She then tells the narrator that she knows a lot of people who are in love with her, so maybe she should ask a friend instead of asking her father's old boss. But the narrator is not so sure. He tells her that he'll only date mugino, the only person he's ever met who's actually been in a relationship with someone. He's not worried about the girl's feelings for him, though, because she has confidence in her own abilities. He also tells her to calm down, because if she starts to worry about her own feelings, then she might as well worry about the people around her. He then tells her not to worry too much about her crush, because he'd be happy to introduce her to someone else if she wanted to. But he also warns her to be careful not to get too excited about introducing her to anyone, since she might lose interest in him if she does.
