He tells her that his wife is gardening as a hobby, and that she's not married yet, so she should be able to do whatever she wants with her time. The girl is upset that the farmer is interfering with her relationship with her father-in-law, but the farmer assures her that it's perfectly fine for a married couple to have their own business. He also tells the girl that they'll get some fresh vegetables from the garden in a few days.
