The chapter opens with a warning from the narrator about the dangers of former delinquent farmers' sex. The narrator reminds the reader that he is a former student of Viola and Viola's, and that Viola is now married to a man named "Chiaki." The narrator warns Viola not to tell anyone that she has married a former delinquent farmer. Viola tells the narrator that she and Chiaki have been living together for a month and that she is afraid that she will have to give up on her relationship with Chiaki. Viola asks the narrator if he is planning to live in the field for the rest of the year, and the narrator tells her that he does not plan to do so. Viola says that she wants to be useful in the fields, but that she does not want to be a burden to Chiki. She tells him that she still loves Chiaki, and she asks him to stop hurting her. She says that he has to do something for her sake any more, but Chiki does not need to do anything. She reminds him that the person who is "importing ant" to her is "chiaki." She asks Chiaki to get out of the house and kiss her, and he does so. He says that it will not rain tonight, so they can kiss for a second time, and then he will take care of her. Viola and Chiki kiss for the first time in a while, and they feel that they have not been able to kiss so deeply in a long time. They are getting wet, but they will not let anyone touch them.
