The story opens with the narrator, who is a child of high rank. He was born of that rank, and he never wants to look down on the world around him. The narrator tells a bedtime story about a child who was born in a wealthy family. The child knew from an early age that he would never be able to grow up without his brother's approval. One day, however, the child saw something he had always wanted to do. He decided to build an angel's cage so that the angel would not be seen by his brother or anyone else. He hoped to open the cage, but the angel stopped smiling at him.
