This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between Caroline and Tartuffe. Caroline says that Tartuffe is a "gentle and thoughtful prince" who is "worthy of our miss Caroline" . Tartuffe, she says, is attracted to Caroline because he is the "reincarnated of the heavenly goddess" , the "child of light" responsible for "fighting against the darkness"
