About This Chapter
In this chapter, the young narrator tells us about her family's history. She tells us that her older brother, the Duke of Northumberland, has always been "an earnest man" . He's been married to the Queen's daughter, Anne, for five years, and they've had a son, Prince Andrew, since then. The Duke is still thinking about giving the dukedom to his younger brother, Prince John. Anne's family has been very domineering, but the Duke has been trying to let go of his love for Anne for so long that Anne has become depressed and ill, and the Duke hasn't been able to do anything to help her. Anne says that she knows that the Duke is planning to give her a dukedom, but she doesn't know how he's going to do it. She says that her brother is like a "ray of light" in the dark, and she wishes it weren't him who she saw at the Flower Kingdom that day, so she can lock herself in her old pace, without changing. She also says that no one will be able to see her light, including her brother, because she's a king who's frozen on a cold winter night. She asks her family if they're treating her well enough. After all, she says
