This chapter opens with a description of a kitten named "puff." The kitten's owner, a woman named "mother-in-law," explains that she is pregnant and that she wants to keep the kitten as a pet. She wants to raise the kitten with her daughter, "shi-yi," and her husband, "xuer." She says that she will take the kitten and leave with her if she does not like it. She explains that the last time she asked for a pet, she was unable to refuse because "shen-munan" was not interested in the request. This time, however, she is willing to accept the kitten because it is "so cute" and because it will make her and her daughter feel "affectioante." She adds that if anyone throws the kitten away or treats it badly, she will make sure that the person will suffer the same fate as the kitten. The kitten will be locked in the bedroom during the day and will be released at night.
