In this chapter, the narrator tells the story of his mother's death. He explains that his real name is "Mo shi - shi" , but that he only existed for a few years when his mother was still alive. When she died, his grandparents, who had been sick, became very ill. They left the world, as they did not want to accept the "double psycho logical shock" of the death of their loved one. After his escape, he changed his name to "Mous yi" . He says that life is full of "better things in life" and that his mother left him with a "blessed" life.
