He needs to kill both of them, pronto. The blood barbarians have stopped chasing after them, but they haven't yet arrived. Maybe some other troop has gotten in their way, too, and they've survived thanks to their backup troop? The hero's afraid that by the time the backup troop arrives, the mysterious soldier who saved them might already have been killed.
