This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between Cai Ling and Cai Ling's servant, who tells Cai Ling that if Cai Ling still lives, Cai Ling will kill herself to save Cai Ling. Cai Ling then tells her that Cai Ling is still alive and that she must return to the family to pay for her sin. This is a direct quote from the letter Cai Ling wrote to Cai Ling when Cai Ling was still a young child. The letter also says that she will pay Cai Ling for her sins and return to her own family to "pay for sins" with her life
