In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters, including the doctor, the master of the martial arts, and the two young men who are supposed to be his apprentices. We learn that the doctor is an arrogant, self-important man, and that the young man, who is called Xu Qing, is not very good at his martial arts. The master, however, is determined to prove that he is the best of the lot, and he demands that the boy be given the opportunity to learn the art of fighting. The young men are eager to learn, and when they are told that they will have to fight with the master, they begin to practice their moves.
