About This Chapter
This chapter begins with the protagonist's search for the origin of a stamp that he has seen in the mail. He is puzzled by the lack of information on the stamp on the mailroom's bulletin board. He decides to look it up on the web. The elephant design is one of the most famous stamps in the collection of the Qiang dynasty, which flourished in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. On the back of an elephant is a "pot of eternal youth," a symbol of youth and regeneration. The Chinese character for "fu" is an homonym for happiness. Together with the elephants and the clouds, the clouds combine to signify an "uncertainty sign from the heaven." The protagonist is very excited to find out that the stamp he bought for eight yuan is actually worth more than that, and that it can be sold at auction for a price of over 60,000 hkd, which is a lot of money for a piece of paper. The protagonist then asks for help moving the monitor on the bulletin board, and he is pleased to find that the fat man is a professional writer. He praises the man for educating his mistress in one night, and thanks him for his hard work. He also asks if he can sell the stamp for money, and the protagonist says that if he manages to do so, his whole life will change.
