The narrator introduces us to a new character. He's called "Xu Qing" and he's a gambler. He tells us how to play dice: bet on which player has the greater value, bet on odds or evens, and bet on the "point" of the dice. The narrator says that shaking the dice looks fun, so he suggests that the player shake the dice and guess which player guesses right. This is the hardest part of the game, the narrator says, because the dice are made of a thin, flannel-like substance. This way, the dice won't get too loud even if it's shaken. This sounds like a great idea, but the narrator is worried that this guy is also a gambler, because he seems so confident. He says that he and the other player each have five million yuan in front of them, so they should just wait and see who wins the game first. This guy shakes the dice first, and the narrator doesn't think that's such a bad idea. He thinks that the guy is really good at guessing the point, but he can't figure
