This chapter opens with the demon sword that the killer uses to slay his victims. It's a reproduction of the sword that was used by the leader of the "Ten ghosts of the Dark Night" . The narrator tells the story of the ten ghosts and how they terrorized the area. They were known as "the ten ghosts" because they caused "calamity wherever they go" , but they were still humans. After the siege, masanobu disappeared. He was said to be handsome, intelligent and skilled in fighting. Everyone thought that he'd be defeated by the woman who rescued women and children from the clutches of the ghost hunters. She was the "female city lord" of the neighboring town, and everyone thought she'd defeat the killer. This is the first time the narrator has heard of a female city lord being defeated by a male city lord, and he's glad that she was defeated. He tells the guests that although he learned about the ghost hunter's past , it didn't help them in any way, because it only made them realize that he is evil and cunning. His biggest weakness, he says, is that he has a weakness called hone-onna. If he doesn't find him, he'll die of the curse. The guests pray that this is the "obon festival" and that they will meet again someday.
