About This Chapter
In this chapter, Shmoop introduces us to Shin-Jung, the protagonist of the story. He's a middle-class kid who's been bullied by his friends at school. He tells us that his name is Lee, and that he's from a poor family. He says that he knows who he is, because he feels that his friends are tormenting other kids by testing their manhood. He also says that his friend, Si-Hwan, doesn't seem to know who he really is. He asks her not to test his manhood, and she tells him to stop acting like he knows him. She also tells him not to apologize when he shoves someone, because she thinks that's how old he is and he thinks that he can just get away with it. She tells him that he shouldn't forget about his friends, because they're letting him off the hook. She says that she's tired of him, too, and he should stop being a jerk and stop being such a jerk. She adds that he should just stop being so old and stop acting so old. He agrees with her, but he says that if he keeps acting this way, he'll never be able to make up for it. He adds that if his friends don't stop being jerks, then he won't have anything left to do with his life anymore. He starts to get closer to his friend and starts to talk to him more. He talks about how he feels like his friend isn't getting along with Si-
