About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's been having a tough time of it. He's a middle school kid who's hanging out with a bunch of other kids. One day, he runs into a friend of his from school. He tells the friend to hang out with him and his friends and stop being lonely. The three of them hang out all the time, and the narrator says that it's really fun hanging out. The narrator then tells us a little story about how he met his friend. He says that he used to be a quiet kid who didn't really have a lot of friends. He used to walk home from school every day, so he wasn't very sociable. He had a friend who was an "irreplaceable friend" . The two of them would hang out together and have a good time. They'd go to the movies together and hang out in the park together. It was super fun. Then, one day, they ran into the other kids at the park. The other kids started hanging out together, too, and they started beating the crap out of each other. It's not like they're going to hurt each other, but it was fun. So the narrator starts hanging out more and more with these other kids, and he starts to feel superior to them. He starts to think that they've got the upper hand. He tries to stop doing this, but he can't. He keeps doing it, and when he realizes how much he has already done, he tries to quit. But he keeps going. He doesn't have enough money to stop. He wants to apologize to his friend, but that's just not good enough. So he asks his friend if she finds it fun to bully other people, and she says yes.
