The chapter opens with a series of exchanges between the two men. The first is between the grandfather and the son. He asks the son if he still thinks he should forget about the accident, and says that when he was paralyzed in it, he almost could not have his own family. But hearing the old man's words, he realizes that the family cares only about money. The two men decide to take a ten-minute break. The next chapter begins with the son wondering what to do.
