About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a discussion of skirt length. The students are supposed to walk in a circle around the room, but the narrator wants to stay in the circle longer. He wants to watch the students go by, but he also wants to know what they're thinking. He's worried that the students are staring at him, and he wants to whisper to them that he's watching them too. The narrator says that everyone except his cousin has avoided him since he was very small, and that's why he has become so popular. He tells the students that he wants something to make their hearts skip a beat. He says that every time he tries to write a love story, he gets an e-mail from someone asking him to write about friendship. He doesn't know how to do it, he says, because he can't think of anything he can write about. He also says that he gets a lot of e-mails from people who want to write love stories. He asks the students if they've been doing anything lately, and they all say that they haven't. He then asks if they are busy right now, and one of the students says that she is. He goes on to say that she has a thing for him, but that she's a "piece of work" and that she shouldn't be making him do something that won't "hurt her conscience" . The two students begin to argue about who's doing what, and the narrator says she'll hold her hand. She says that her personality is cold and her hard is so "ho blush pah" no.
