About This Chapter
The narrator wakes up in the middle of the day and tells everyone that he's tired and hungry. He's been waiting for everyone to rise, but no one has come. He asks if anyone's going to leave, and everyone says they'll. The narrator says he doesn't know if he'll leave yet, but he'd like to find something interesting to do. He says he likes this place, but it's full of people who are having trouble living. He wonders why he looks so depressed, since he can live without pain and suffering. He thinks that if he had made this place more attractive, people wouldn't think about leaving, but instead they would find something to worry about. He also says that everyone is the same, and that after he gave him this body, he found a lot of things to worry over because of it. He wants to keep this problem to himself, because he doesn1t want to tell anyone about it, even though it is so important to him. He tells the narrator that he can keep him living forever if he keeps looking for his own life. He then asks the narrator if he has ever thought about how people died, or how they will live from here on out. He replies that he hasn1t, and the narrator is sorry that he told him to not work with one hand. He goes on to say that the narrator looks happy when he looks at his chest, because she couldn1t use chopsticks to eat. He feels sorry for her, because one day she will end up like the kids at school, and she won1t be able to eat with chopsticks.
