The chapter opens with a soliloquy by the Governess. She tells us that she has been waiting for someone to show up for a long time, and that she is afraid that she will attract "nasty monsters" to her. She is worried about how much money she will have to pay for the meal she ate at the restaurant, and how she will be able to survive without her. The Governess says she will write a letter to her friend, telling her that she does not have enough money, and then she will leave. She wonders if he will borrow some paper and pen from her to write the letter. She asks him if he would like to borrow the paper, and he says that he would, but that he has to send him back to the Island. He tells her that tonari told him that he might be a bad devil, and she says that talk is "far removed from us" . She says that even if he is not with her, she will certainly be killed by "the nokkers" , but she will die anyway. He asks her if she knows what kind of death she will face. She replies that she doesnt know until the moment when she has to face it. He says that this is the "saurnine forest there is really no one there . . when i have to do your wounds / still hurt ?"
