About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that all of the citizens of the ruined village are gathered to protect the princess from the attack. The princess asks the citizens to appeal to them for help, and the soldiers to earn their trust. When the castle grows to about ten feet in diameter, it will be theirs. The citizens do not trust the castle, and there is no trust there, says the prince. He tells the princess that he wants to build a new castle from the ground, but he will need her permission. He asks the prince to join him for a game of cards until the battle is over. The prince tells him that the enemy does not need bodies, and that the prince's father used to make swords for the Ursainian army. When his grandmother's health got worse, his father started treating him badly, and he joined the army as if he were running away from home. When she died, the prince joined the enemy's army. He feels bad for the people of the village, who were destroyed by the earthquake. He is glad to see that the foundation for the new castle has been built.
