About This Chapter
The narrator asks how long it has been since he came to the island. He sighs and asks himself how long he has to keep up with the island's natural history. He says he hasn't eaten fish since he left the donkey behind. He then decided to become a crab. He's happy that he's able to acquire things he can't in his human form, but he realizes that the crab is a kind of thing that's not able to do what the humans are doing. He also realizes that his eyes are bad and that sometimes the insects try to eat him. He decides to dig a hole in his body so that if he dies, he won't be sad. He sees that ghoti is with someone else. He realizes that he has been abandoned. A nokker comes when he returns to human form. He remembers the exploding arrows, which are very powerful. Sometimes he'd get sad. The narrator says he hated himself for living on, using the lives of others. But even if it wasn't peak condition, the noks still came. He had to use his abilities his first form had. The noks always come from trees or under the ground. He wonders if the people of the island are doing well since they've been living on the island for 40 years.
