About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've seen a wolf, but it's back. The narrator tells us that the wolf has been living in bachel for a while, and that it has gained "consciousness" and "restraint" . The wolf's first taste of life at the fort was "pain" , "silk sha" and, of course, "rattle thank goodness" : "what a relief !" . But the narrator doesn't like the smell of the wood at the auntie's place, so he's running low on food to burn. The wood is damp from the snow, so the fire won't be out soon. There's a lot of fish and fruit in the wood, and everyone has told him that he'll have to hold it down for the fire to burn out . He's even drawn the hairy guy who used to live across from them , which is a great way to tell people that they used to be here. The wolves have come a long way, and they've even seen a fish. They've also seen a bunch of fruit, and the narrator says that he can't really understand what it is like, but he'd like to know. He asks if they're going back to the river where everyone else went, but the narrator refuses to go back. He wants to go home, he says, because his leg is feeling better, and he wants to return to the "paradise" of his childhood. But, the narrator admits, the wolves are going to have to wait until he gets better.
