About This Chapter
It's morning, and Hirokazu has arrived at the school. He's so excited to see his old friend that he's not sure how to react to the sight of his old flame. He tells her that she's too close to her, and that she looks like a "stick" . He doesn't want her to ride the bus with him, though, because he thinks it's "a timeless symbol" of youth. He also tells her not to worry about dropping her hair clip on the bus, because she might have dropped it there. He asks her why she hasn't told him about it, and she tells him that she was worried about it the day before. She also tells him about the clip dropping on the way to the school, and he asks her if she picked it up. She says that she thinks it might be hers, but he asks why she didn't push it on him. He then asks her about her childhood friend, who was her "only boy" in high school. She tells him to give her back the hair clip, because it was a "tacky clip" with a "heart" on it. She then asks him if he was her friend's friend, and when he says yes, she asks him who his friend was. He replies that he was his "boy friend" back then, but that he stopped talking to her when he was in junior high school because he was too small for her. She asks him why he waited so long to tell her about his hair clip. He says he was worried that it would be too serious for her to tell him sooner, but she says that it was "a shock to me" , which makes her feel better. She wants to know if she has any idea what happened to the clip, or if she remembers it at all. She wonders why they don't call the school bus company right away.
