About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to the Hong family, who have just arrived in Hong Kong. The narrator tells us that the family has just arrived, and that they are looking for low-priced fabric. The uncle of the Hong's, Mr. Lan, tells the narrator that the silks of the duan's family are "long outdated" and that the products of the second uncle are not as good as those of the first uncle. The second uncle is the elder of the family, and he was rude to the narrator's father. The first uncle says that his products are more expensive than those of his family, but the narrator points out that high-end silks are too costly for the average person to afford. He suggests that the two families might have a chance of working together in the future, and the narrator agrees. He then asks the shopkeeper if he is ready to go, to which the shopkeeper replies that he is. The shopkeeper says that he will be leaving soon, but that he cannot let the shopkeeper do what he pleases. He says that if the shopkeeper finds out that the shopkeeper is causing trouble, the shopkeeper will be angry, and so the shopkeeper should not tell the shopkeeper's uncle, who is a member of the "Anti-Rebel Army." The narrator asks the uncle why he didn't use the opportunity to bully the shopkeeper in the store. He also asks if the uncle is planning to kidnap the shopkeeper, and if he means to do so, the uncle replies that there is no reason why not to let the hong's help them. He has an idea, he says, but he does not know if it works.
