In this chapter, Ren tells his uncle that he wants to open a silk factory in Shanghai with his business partner, yuesheng lan. Ren wants to know why his uncle treated him so poorly when he was younger, and why he didn't discuss the subject of remarriage with him. Ren also wants to go to Japan to learn how to use machines to replace human labor in his factory.
