The next day, the two of them go for a walk, and Miss Betsey asks Mr. Betsey if he's had a good day. He says that he has, but he doesn't want to talk about it too much because he'd rather talk about his upcoming exams. He tells her that he and Betsey have gotten along well and that they're getting along well enough that they don't seem to be fighting anymore. He also says that everyone is starting to worry about their future, and that it's a good thing that they have something stable to fall back on. He wants to reassure Betsey that his future is more stable than everyone else's, and he wants her to be happy when she decides to settle down. He goes on to say that he wants to make sure that she's happy when they do decide to get married, because he thinks that's the only way she'll be able to make up for all of her bad feelings about him.
