The next morning, Mr. Jarndyce comes to visit his friend, who is a teacher. He tells him that he has heard that he is in love with a woman and that he should not worry about it. He also tells the young man that it is better to be in a relationship than to be alone. The young man, however, is not convinced. He says that he does not want to be a part of a relationship that is meant to be broken up after the departure of the couple. He asks the teacher if he is studying for an exam. The teacher says he is, but he is not sure if he will be able to pass the exam.
