The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Hiroshi. Hiroshi tells the story of how he came to be a florist in Japan. He tells us that he has been working as a "florist" in order to support his family, but now that his daughter has grown up, he realizes that he is lying. He wonders if it would be possible for him to move into the lower part of the house and work in the garden for a while. He says that he would like to do so, but he is afraid that the Japanese people would freak out if he did so, so he wonders if they would be willing to let him live in their house for a little while.
