In this chapter, we are introduced to a young woman named Lily, who has just returned from a trip to Europe with her father. She is very excited to be reunited with her family, but she is also afraid that her father will not approve of her decision to return to the States. Lily tells her father that she will be a good daughter, but that she is reluctant to leave the country because she is afraid of her father's disapproval. Lily thanks her father and mother for coming to pick her up, and then asks them to make her a bouquet of flowers. Lily explains that she has been given some of the flowers from the nurseries in her area, and that she plans to use them to decorate her own bouquet. Lily's father is very calm, and she wonders if he would be able to keep his cool if his daughter were to return home and consume him.
