About This Chapter
In this short scene, we are introduced to the bawdy young woman who has just returned home from a night out with Mr. Lorry. She tells us that she is glad to be home, but that she wishes she had not gone out that night. She says that she knows that Mr. Jarndyce has no interest in her as a woman, and that it is better for her to not go out any more. She also says that her house is creaky with the cold, and she wonders what to do with herself at this time of year. She asks if she is used to taking someone back home, and the answer is a resounding "yes". She then asks if he has ever kissed her before, and he replies that he has kissed her many times before, but she does not know how to react to a kiss. She then wonders if she has ever been used to kissing someone, and wonders if this is the first time she has kissed someone.
